India's ₹23,000Cr+ luggage market had zero premium design-first challenger brands with legacy players owning >90% of organised revenue
D2C timing
The Pandemic-driven shift from offline to online accelerated customer acquisition, consumers were now more willing to try new brands digitally
Design moat
Mokobara's product moat was built deliberately: 18 months of prototype testing with London-based design agency Morrama, obsession over the tiniest of details like the usage of Japanese Hinomoto wheels, and production through the same OEM ecosystem used by Samsonite and TUMI. The result was a design-led product that stood out visually, performed reliably, and translated into exceptional brand recall and commercial traction.
Premiumisation Thesis
Indian consumers were already trading up across lifestyle categories, but luggage had remained largely functional, uninspiring, and incumbent-led. Mokobara addressed this gap with a design-first, aspirational travel brand built for younger consumers who wanted their luggage to reflect their identity.
Part 1: The Entry Stage and Investment Thesis
Backing Design Obsession in a category indifferent to design.
Sauce wrote Mokobara’s first institutional cheque of ₹2.2 crore in March 2020, before the brand had launched a single product.
When Manu met Sangeet and Navin, he saw what others had overlooked: Mokobara was not simply selling luggage, it was building an aspirational travel brand for a new generation of Indian consumers with a positioning and design language that felt modern, expressive, and distinctly native to younger travellers.
Investing in Mokobara was a quick decision for me. The opportunity seemed obvious...everything was refreshing and youthful, perfect for the new-age consumer
Unlike incumbents who were offline-first and functional in positioning, Mokobara was built as a lifestyle statement from day one, bold colours, design-led, digital-first, aspiration-driven. It’s the only homegrown brand that could sit next to a designer handbag or a tote in a wardrobe. Even Tumi and Samsonite hadn’t achieved this.
The early investment thesis was not just that India would travel more, but that Indian travellers would begin to care more about what they travelled with. Sauce believed the category was waiting for a new age challenger that could sit between utilitarian mass brands and expensive global incumbents. Mokobara’s obsession with colour, form, functionality, and brand expression made it one of the few companies capable of turning luggage from a commodity purchase into an aspirational lifestyle choice.
